셰자드 다우드(Shezad Dawood, 영국, 1974)는 회화, 직물, 영상, 디지털 미디어 등 다양한 매체를 넘나들며, 현실과 내러티브, 상징체계를 융합해온 다층적 예술가이다. 인문학, 사회과학, 자연과학 등 여러 학문 분야의 경계를 넘는 다학제적 접근을 바탕으로 작업하며, 과거와 현재, 신화와 과학, 사실과 허구가 얽힌 복합적인 서사를 구축한다. 그는 예술은 파키스탄인 어머니, 인도인 아버지, 아앨린드인 계모를 둔 그의 다양한 문화적 유산을 반영하고 있다.
그는 환경, 기후 변화, 생물 다양성의 위기 등 생태학적 주제를 지속적으로 탐구해왔으며, 인간과 자연의 관계를 일방적인 지배 구조가 아닌 상호작용의 구조로 인식한다.
다우드의 작업은 인간 활동이 환경에 미치는 영향뿐 아니라, 환경의 변화가 다시 인간 사회와 정체성에 어떤 방식으로 되돌아오는지를 시각화한다. 특히 그는 난민, 해양 생태, 기후 위기, 탈식민주의, 보이지 않는 권력 구조 등 다양한 이슈들이 실제로는 서로 긴밀하게 연결되어 있음을 예술적으로 드러내며, ‘모든 것이 연결된 생태적 세계’라는 감각을 작품 속에서 구현하고 있다. 그의 예술은 단순한 재현을 넘어서, 관객이 오늘날의 위기를 다른 방식으로 사유하고 감각하게 만드는 비평적 실천이라 할 수 있다.

작품소개
이 작품은 베네치아의 전통적인 화려한 수공예 천 위에, 람페두사섬(Rampedusa)으로 가다가 바다에서 배가 전복되어 사망한 난민들의 소지품을 그린 것이다. 이를 위해 베네치아의 전통 직물 제작사인 포르투니(Fortuny)와 난민들의 신원을 확인하기 위해 바다에서 실종한 이들의 소지품을 보관하고 있던 라바노프(Rabanof)와의 협업이 이루어졌다.
북아프리카 난민들이 지중해에서 배가 뒤집혀 모두 익사한 사건과 관련해 작가는 이들의 항해 경로에 있는 수중 돌출부에 도달하는 태양의 복사열이 조류의 변화를 야기해 매우 위험한 소용돌이를 일으킨 점에 주목했다. 그는 해양학과 이주, 난민, 태양의 흑점 폭발과 전통 직물 공예, 비가시적이며 초국가적인 권력과 기후 변화, 생물학 등 서로 무관해 보이는 사실들 간의 관계를 드러냄으로써 모든 것이 서로 연결되어 있음을 보여준다.
작품의 실종자 소지품은 우리의 생명과 현실이 얼마나 위태로운지를 나타내고 현재 우리의 모습, 우리의 상실 등을 드러낸다. 이 작품은 현시대가 마주하고 있는 인도주의적 위기뿐만 아니라 전체 생물권에 영향을 미치는 더 넓은 위기에 대해 말하고 있다. 셰자드 다우드는 생명의 위태로움과 개인의 흔적을 통해, 우리가 외면하고 싶은 현실과 생태계 속 인간의 위치에 대한 질문을 던진다. 바다에 가라앉은 것은 단지 지갑 하나가 아니라, 우리가 무심히 지나친 생명의 무게, 기후변화가 낳은 생태계 파괴의 현실인 것은 아닐까?
